Glamourpuss Failure 5 by jhames34 Glamourpuss Failure 5 by jhames34
Getting better at it. I think part of the problem is my limited amount of fashion magazines to select photos from. this one was a model online. The photo had a good amount of shadow to play with.
:icondave-sim: visit Dave Sim's Deviantart account. He is the creator of Glamourpuss and the greatest storyteller in comic book history. (With due respect to Will Eisner.)

OK... I wasn't expecting to find Glamourpuss fan art on dA but as a fellow admirer of Dave Sim's work I'm glad I did! It's too bad dave had to truncate GP, but he's committed to finish the strange death of Alex Raymond... so that's cool.

If you are interested in tracking down reference of fashion models you might want to pick up the September Vogue special anniversary issue (out now). Nearly 1k pages of high end fashion photography for $5.99. It's totally worth it. Also, check out the work of the photographer Helmut Newton. He's done work for fashion magazines since the fifties and his cannon is vast, but there is greatness to be found there... peep: [link]

Thanks for the heads up on the Vogue special! And always glad to know a fellow cerebite! Might want to check out the official Cerebus facebook page, if you do facebook :)
I've heard of Helmut Newton but hearing of someone and really *knowing* their work is two different things, so I shall have to investigate further...

nicely done. It's got some style to it, rather than what Sim is currently doing, which is, sadly and shamefully, straight up tracing.

i couldn't disagree more. Having seen many of the photos he has used, he is clearly not 'straight-up tracing.' you can even recognize his style in a lot of the linework in glamourpuss. Most great illustration work of the early 20th century involved tracing, and Dave manages to do it better than most.

Well, he *is* straight up tracing, but then inking with a brush, emulating the different styles of the past.
The only thing that seems Sim-ish are some of the hands. Dave’s hands are very much _his_ hands.

Just because it was previously done, doesn’t make it right. And I’d say it’s “some” if not “few”, certainly not “most” great illustration work….

As for “tracing better”…well, it should all be outlawed (ok, that’s extreme)…might as well buy a colouring book and ink over that. Save a lot of time.

Good that you dig it, obvious a portion of people do (I would have bet GP would not have last 6 issues), and large fan bases of other tracers currently working for The Bigs are abound…

Personally, I find it very, very unfortunate that such a gifted cartoonist is continuing down this road for so long.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, then :)

Thanks a bunch! Could you tell from this one image, or from my "glamourpuss failures" drawings as well? :) your art is swell as well:)

Actually I noticed you're a regular poster on the Dave Sim journals and thought I'd poke around your gallery as well.

I don't know if I'd call them failures. Figure every drawing is a series of problems to be solved. You solved more than you didn't, so by that thinking... well, you get my point!

Indeed I get your point, I call them Glamourpuss failures because they are my first attempts ever at photorealism, so they're pretty much guaranteed to be clunkers :) I'm glad you poked around, pokey-man
